Creations born to expand and shift perceptions.

For over a decade, Diva has been knitting a scarf named Emilio. When he is fully grown, Emilio will be one mile long, but that won’t be for at least fifteen more years. She knits only when she feels completely present and she makes every decision about material, color, and pattern intuitively in the moment. The only thing planned about Emilio is his final length. Within his stitches, Emilio carries not only evidence of the passing of time, but also memories of that time - ribbons from packages, yarn gifted by friends - making him a living witness to Diva’s life. This role is most apparent when you see him in person, wound around her while she quietly and methodically brings more of his form to life. They seem inextricable from each other, locked in a symbiotic relationship that protects them both from the outside world. Emilio and Diva show us an idealized version of a mother/child relationship and allow us to reflect on how much power we have to create these relationships in our own lives.

In addition to Emilio, Diva knits wearable pieces of art you can see and purchase here. Just like Emilio, these pieces are knitted intuitively and only when she is completely present. No patterns are used in their creation. They dictate their own form to her and she brings it to life with her hands.

Diva has worked in photography and painting and most recently began working in large scale sculpture. An experiential piece allowing the viewer to feel human connection in the absence of visual cues began while she was in residence at Chateau Orquevaux, three hours outside Paris in the French countryside. During her time there she constructed what would become the model for a much larger piece, currently under construction in her Los Angeles studio. When it is complete, we will once again have an opportunity to push up against the walls of our world, inviting in new perspectives and growing our sense of who we are as individuals and as a collective.
